Chemical Pathology

The Department of Chemical pathology is a department in medical laboratory service. We specialize in several medical lab diagnostic analysis like HBA|C for the control of Diabetes mellitus, LFT and Elulc for liver and kidney functions respectively and hormonal assay for fertility evaluation and others

Haematology & Blood Transfusion

We undertake analysis of inimuno haematological parameter such as Hb, PCV, MCV, MCH, ESR, WBCT, WBCD, Plathlets, coagulation profile, HBsAg, HCV, RVS, CD4, Blood Group, Genotype. It also provides services of grouping and X. matching of blood products and training programs.

Parasitology

This is a department under the medical laboratory services that deals with analysis of parasite found in specimen, urine etc. We carry out test on urine microscopy, stool microscopy, malaria parasite test etc

Anatomical Pathology

One of our specialty area provides services in histopathology, cytopathology and autopsy where tissue and cytologic diagnoses are made by consultant pathologist.

Medical Microbiology

The department rendered laboratory investigations on blood fluids/specimen, which include Urine, Urethra, HVS, Stool, Ear, Pus, CSF, Throat, Sputum, Wound Cultures e.t.c others include Widal, TB. Gene report, Mycology.

O & G Department

The O&G Department Provides both out-patient and In-patient care including 24 hours Emergency Services .

We also provide medical consultation services to other clinical departments.

FAMILY MEDICINE/ GOPD SERVICES

The Hospital emphasizes on the family medicine practice as a responsibility for total heath care from first contact and initial assessment to ongoing care of chronic problems. The department of Family Medicine/GOPD thus helps the patient in accessing health care in a cost effective way by the coordination and and integration of all necessary health services through proper and meaningful referral with least amount of fragmentation of care

Dialysis

Dialysis (Haemodialysis)  is a unit under Medicine department here we dialyze patient with renal problem and counsel them for RRT ( Renal Replacement Therapy as need arises.)

Central Sterilization and Supply Department

The Central Sterilization and Supply Department (CSSD) is a unit in FMC charged with the responsibility of sterilizing hospital utensils, items and instrument, we autoclave theatre instruments and also sends to them.

Mental Health

The Mental Health Department helps individual with mental disorders and their families cope with their problems , educating future specialist in the field and conduct research on mental health.

Physiotherapy

The Physiotherapy is a health care profession which deals with the management of patients utilizing physical agents and the hands. This department has been in existence since the inception of the Hospital. It has staff strength of fourteen professional physiotherapist. The specialist managed are these: Orthopedics surgery, Neurology, Pediatrics, O&G but not limited to them alone. Services are available to both out and in-patient basis.

PAEDIATRICS

To boost the paediatric services, the Department of paedratrics received an upgrade and delineated into sub-specialties by which the responsibility of providing high quality services to children below 18 years of age were carried out during the four year period under review. Each of the su-specialties is headed by full-time medical consultant with additional complements of four part-time consultants ( 2 Professors of paediatrics, 1 Associate Professor and 1 Consultant) besides a number of senior and Junior residents, including experienced and skilled nurses as well as health attendants.

COMMUNITY MEDICINE/PUBLIC HEALTH

Community Medicine practice is one of the primary medical care specialties in the Hospital. It is specialty of first contact with patients, and it serves as entry point of patients into the Nation’s Health care system. It devoted to providing comprehensive preventive promotive and curative care with emphasis on individuals and their social environment. It involves both Rural and Urban Communities with a view to improving the general health status of the populace.

The Department of community Medicine is charged with the responsibility of providing services in this area to members of the public.

KEY FUNCTIONS/SERVICES

NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME/STAFF CLINIC

This clinic provides health services for members of staff and their family and non -members of staff, who are registered with the Scheme

GENERAL OUTPATIENT AND ENDEMIC DISEASE CLINIC

The clinic provides the following services: Investigation and treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases including health education. Medicial examination and certification of food handlers/vendors

EPIDEMIC OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION AND CONTROL
SEXUAL TRANSMITTED INFECTION (STI) & HIV CLINIC
WELL PERSONS SCREENING CLINIC

To detect unrecognized disease or defects in apparently healthy individuals.

CHILD WELFARE /IMMUNOPROPHYLAXIS CLINIC

The clinic is open to all children under the age of five. Services provided include:

  • Growth Monitoring
  • Immunization treatment of common childhood illnesses
  • Immunization of adults
  • Cover accident and emergency (OTUOKE)
  • International travelers’ certification (Yellow card issuance)
  • Infection Control and Routine public health inspection of work places
  • Disease surveillance  & Notification for vaccine preventable Diseases (VPD), Epidemic Prone Diseases, Diseases of Public Health importance and internationally notifiable diseases.

Presently, the Department  has a total 0f 581 nurses, 261 health attendants.

The staff strength covered both the Main site in Yenagoa and the Outreach at Otuoke in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa.

The Department rendered holistic nursing care to both in and outpatients in the Wards and Units of Hospital.

Apart from general nursing practitioners, the Department was encouraged to have specially trained nurses.

PHARMACY SERVICES

Pharmacy services are key to health care service delivery of the Hospital. To satisfy the pharmaceutical needs of the patients, the Department of pharmacy is charged with the responsibility of ensuring the medicines that are effective, affordable, safe and of good quality are made available for rational used during service delivery.

The Department provides pharmaceutical services in all ramification in the Hospital and these include but not limited to daily round, stock-stacking , filling patients’ prescriptions, drug dispensing, clinical presentations by interns pharmacists, pharmaceutical interventions, drug information services to doctors, nurses and clients, preparation of extemporaneous preparations,  delivery of pharmaceutical care, training of interns and pharmacy students.

OPHTHALMOLOGY SERVICES.

The opthamology Department is saddled with the task of ophthalmology services which range from preservation or restoration of sight as well as dealing with loss of sight among the many clients from within and outside Bayelsa State.

The Department, in it’s dedicated eye Complex, has an Eye Clinic, Visual Acuity Room, Refraction Room, Operating Theatre and an Optical Workshop
